Express Entry category-based selection & PNP in-demand occupations
Canada no longer selects only by highest CRS. Since 2023, IRCC runs category-based Express Entry draws for occupations facing genuine labour shortage — healthcare, trades, STEM, transport, agriculture and French-language ability — and most provinces layer their own in-demand occupation streams on top. If your NOC sits in a category below, your practical cut-off can be 50-120 CRS points lower than a general draw.
How the Canada shortage list works
- 1Find your NOC 2021 code and TEER level — the entire Canadian selection system is built on it.
- 2Check whether the NOC appears in a 2026 category-based Express Entry draw or a provincial in-demand stream.
- 3You generally need at least six months of continuous experience in that occupation within the last three years.
- 4A provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points and effectively guarantees an invitation.
