Germany in-demand occupation list 2026 — shortage jobs for Indians

Overview

Engpassberufe (bottleneck occupations) & Opportunity Card shortage roles

Germany's Fachkräfteeinwanderungsgesetz opened the widest skilled-migration door in Europe. The Bundesagentur für Arbeit publishes a Engpassanalyse identifying bottleneck occupations, and shortage roles enjoy a reduced EU Blue Card salary threshold plus fast-track recognition. The Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) additionally lets qualified people enter for up to a year to job-hunt.

How the Germany shortage list works

  1. 1Get your Indian degree or diploma recognised — Anabin database check for degrees, ZAB statement or chamber recognition for vocational trades.
  2. 2EU Blue Card: general threshold around €48,300, reduced to roughly €43,760 for shortage occupations and new graduates (2025 figures, indexed annually).
  3. 3Shortage occupations skip the labour-market priority test in most cases.
  4. 4The Opportunity Card scores points for qualification, German or English ability, age and experience — six points gets you in to search for work.

Germany in-demand occupations — FAQs

Do I need German language for a shortage occupation?

+

For IT and engineering, English-language employers are common and A1-B1 German is enough for daily life. For nursing, care and most vocational trades, B1-B2 German plus recognition is mandatory.

What is Anabin and why does it matter?

+

Anabin is the German database rating foreign institutions and degrees. Your university must be H+ rated for a straightforward Blue Card; otherwise a ZAB individual statement is required. We handle both.

Can a diploma holder migrate to Germany?

+

Yes — the Skilled Immigration Act recognises vocational qualifications. A three-year Indian ITI or polytechnic qualification plus chamber recognition can qualify you for a skilled worker visa.
