Chapter 01

The Chancenkarte points system

You need at least 6 points to qualify, plus baseline criteria (recognised or partially recognised qualification, or 2 years vocational training + 2 years work experience). Points come from: qualification in a shortage occupation (1), professional experience (2-3), German language A1-C1 (1-3), English language B2 (1), age under 35/40 (1-2), previous stay in Germany (1) and partner points (1).

Typical Indian tech professional: bachelor's degree in ICT (baseline), 5 years experience (3 pts), B2 English (1 pt), age 30 (2 pts) = 6 points. Adding A2 German (1 pt) and shortage occupation flag (1 pt) comfortably exceeds the threshold.

Chapter 02

What you can do on Chancenkarte

Search for jobs in Germany full-time for 12 months. Work part-time up to 20 hours/week and undertake trial-work stints (up to 2 weeks per employer) while searching. Once you secure a job offer meeting Blue Card or Skilled Worker requirements, convert to the respective residence permit without leaving Germany.
