UK Skilled Worker Visa 2026: New Salary Thresholds, ISL Update & PR Pathway

The UK's Skilled Worker route is the primary work-based immigration pathway to Britain, and it has been through the largest single reform since the post-Brexit points-based system launched. The general salary threshold jumped from £26,200 to £38,700 in April 2024, the Shortage Occupation List (SOL) was replaced by the tighter Immigration Salary List (ISL), and care-worker dependant rules were significantly restricted.
In 2026 these changes are fully bedded in. Here's what Indian applicants — from IT professionals to nurses to teachers — need to know before applying.
The 2026 salary rules
General threshold: £38,700 or the 'going rate' for the occupation, whichever is higher. Going rates are set at the 25th percentile of UK earnings for the specific SOC code.
New entrants (under 26, students switching visas, or postdoctoral researchers): 30% discount on both the general threshold and the going rate.
Immigration Salary List roles: 20% discount off the going rate but the £38,700 general threshold still applies. The ISL is significantly shorter than the old SOL and no longer includes care workers.
Health & Care visa roles (nurses, doctors, allied health): threshold reduced to £29,000 with going rates from NHS pay scales.
Care worker restrictions
From March 2024, overseas care workers on the Health & Care visa can no longer bring dependants. Care providers must also be CQC-registered to sponsor. From 2026, care providers must first prove attempts to recruit workers already in the UK before hiring overseas.
For Indian nurses on the Health & Care visa, dependants are still allowed — the restriction only applies to social care worker (SOC 6135/6136) roles.
Sponsorship: still the gatekeeper
No Skilled Worker visa exists without a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from a UK-licensed employer. Common Indian-friendly sponsor sectors: NHS trusts, IT consultancies, professional services, engineering, hospitality management, and university/research roles.
The Home Office maintains a public Register of Sponsors — always verify your prospective employer holds a valid Worker sponsor licence before accepting a role.
Path to ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain)
5 continuous years on the Skilled Worker visa qualifies you to apply for ILR. Requirements: continued employment with a sponsor at the required salary, no more than 180 days outside the UK in any 12-month rolling period, Life in the UK test pass, English B1.
After 12 months as an ILR holder you can apply for British citizenship. Total India-to-UK-passport timeline: 6 years for most professional applicants.
2026 strategic tips
1. If you're under 26 or on a Graduate visa, exploit the New Entrant discount to secure sponsorship at a lower threshold.
2. For IT roles, target companies actively sponsoring — the Home Office publishes a downloadable Worker & Temporary Worker Sponsor List updated weekly.
3. Consider the Global Talent visa if you're a recognized leader or emerging leader in tech, science or arts — no sponsorship needed and 3-year ILR route.
4. Health & Care visa remains the highest-conversion route for Indian nurses and doctors.
