Australia Skills in Demand (SID) Visa: The Full 2026 Guide for Indian Professionals

In December 2024 Australia retired the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) subclass 482 visa and replaced it with a completely restructured Skills in Demand (SID) visa. Throughout 2025 and into 2026, the Department of Home Affairs has been rolling out further refinements, including new PR pathways, updated Core Skills Occupation Lists and revised salary thresholds.

For Indian professionals, the SID visa is now the primary employer-sponsored route to Australia — and for the first time in a decade, every SID visa holder has a clear, guaranteed pathway to permanent residency.

The three streams of the SID visa

Specialist Skills stream: For high-earning professionals with annual base salaries above AUD 141,210 (2026 threshold). This stream has no occupation list restriction and offers 7-day median processing. Ideal for senior tech, finance, medical specialists and engineering leads.

Core Skills stream: The workhorse category for most applicants, requiring an occupation on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) and a base salary above the Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT) — AUD 76,515 in 2026. Covers accountants, developers, nurses, teachers, chefs, mechanics and hundreds more.

Essential Skills stream: Under development for lower-paid but critical roles such as aged-care workers and disability support workers, linked to sector-specific agreements.

PR pathway — the biggest change

Under the old TSS 482 short-term stream, many workers had no clear PR route. Under SID, every visa holder can apply for the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) after just two years with the same employer — down from three.

Time counted toward PR can also come from any sponsoring employer rather than only the current one, which gives workers real bargaining power.

Points-tested skilled visas: 189, 190, 491

The independent points-tested visa (subclass 189) remains the flagship for candidates without a job offer, but invitation rounds have become smaller and higher-scoring. Cut-offs for popular occupations (accountants, software engineers, civil engineers) now regularly sit at 90–95 points.

State-nominated 190 and regional 491 visas remain the more realistic route for most Indian applicants. Regional visas earn 15 extra points and give access to designated regional postcodes with lower cost-of-living and less competition.

Skills assessment: still the gatekeeper

Every skilled visa requires a positive skills assessment from the relevant authority — Engineers Australia, ACS for IT, VETASSESS for many white-collar roles, and TRA for trades. Assessment timelines in 2026 range from 4 weeks (ACS fast-track) to 16+ weeks (VETASSESS full assessment).

Common rejection reasons: mismatched job duties versus ANZSCO description, missing employer reference letters, unassessed post-qualification experience. A pre-assessment audit is one of the highest-value services a good consultant can provide.

What Indian applicants should focus on in 2026

1. IELTS or PTE 79+ across all bands unlocks 20 points and dramatically improves invitation odds.

2. Positive skills assessment first, EOI second — never in reverse.

3. Consider regional pathways: Adelaide, Hobart, Canberra, Perth, Darwin and much of regional Victoria and NSW qualify for the 15-point regional bonus.

4. If you have 3+ years of Australian study, target the 485 Temporary Graduate visa followed by 190/491 nomination.
