Schengen Visa & ETIAS 2026: The Complete Europe Travel Guide for Indians

Europe has never been more accessible — and never more procedurally complex — for Indian travellers than it is in 2026. The Schengen area expanded to 29 countries after Romania and Bulgaria joined by air and sea in March 2024, the Entry/Exit System (EES) biometric border check went live in October 2025, and the ETIAS travel authorisation is rolling out in phases through 2026.
Here's what Indian tourists, business travellers and family visitors need to prepare for.
Which countries the Schengen visa covers in 2026
The full list of 29 Schengen states: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
Ireland and Cyprus are EU members but not Schengen — separate visa applies. The UK is outside the EU and Schengen — separate UK Visitor visa required.
EES: biometric border checks are live
The Entry/Exit System, live since October 2025, replaces manual passport stamping for non-EU nationals. First-time entry to Schengen involves a short biometric registration: facial photo and four fingerprints, valid for three years.
Practical impact for Indians: expect 10–20 minute queues at first-entry airports until 2026 volumes stabilize. Frequent travellers benefit — subsequent entries take under 60 seconds at automated e-gates.
ETIAS: what it is and when you'll need it
ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is not a visa. It is an online pre-authorisation for visa-exempt nationalities — which does not include India. Indian passport holders will still require a full Schengen visa, so ETIAS does not add a step for you.
The confusion arises because news headlines target visa-exempt travellers. If you hold an Indian passport, your process remains: apply for a Schengen short-stay (C-type) visa via the relevant consulate or VFS Global centre.
Documents Indians must submit in 2026
1. Schengen visa application form (country-specific).
2. Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond planned exit, with 2 blank pages.
3. Two recent biometric photographs (35x45mm).
4. Confirmed round-trip flight itinerary (do not book paid tickets before visa approval — use a reversible reservation).
5. Confirmed accommodation for every day of stay.
6. Detailed day-by-day itinerary.
7. Travel insurance with €30,000 minimum medical cover valid across all Schengen states.
8. Financial proof: last 3–6 months of bank statements (average balance depends on country and duration; typically ₹50,000–₹1.5 lakh minimum), Form 16 or ITR for the last two years.
9. Employment: NOC letter from employer, salary slips for last 3 months, or business registration and GST certificate for self-employed.
10. Cover letter explaining purpose and financing of the trip.
Approval tips from 5,000+ successful applications
Apply at the consulate of your main destination — the country where you spend the most nights. If nights are equal, apply at the country of first entry.
Book flights and hotels via reversible/refundable services (Booking.com free-cancellation, hotel reservation letters, dummy ticket services from IATA agents).
Maintain a healthy average bank balance for the 90 days before submission — sudden large deposits raise red flags.
Never overstay; even a single overstay flag stays in EES for years and complicates every future EU visa.
