Acceptance: who accepts what
IELTS (Academic and UKVI): universally accepted by universities, employers and immigration authorities across the UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and now widely accepted in the US too.
PTE Academic: fully accepted by Australia, New Zealand, UK, Ireland and Canada (including all IRCC visa categories since 2023).
TOEFL iBT: still the safest choice for US universities; also accepted in Canada (including SDS since August 2023), Australia, UK and most European universities.
Difficulty and scoring style
IELTS uses a 9-band scale. Speaking is a face-to-face interview with a certified examiner. Best for candidates who are comfortable with real conversation.
PTE is 100% computer-based, including AI-scored speaking into a headset. Ideal for candidates whose accent worries them in face-to-face settings, and for anyone who needs results in 48 hours.
TOEFL is also computer-based with a longer 2-hour test and integrated tasks that combine reading + listening + speaking. Rewards academic vocabulary.
Cost and retest in 2026

Which one for you?
For Canada PR (Express Entry, PNP, SDS): PTE Core (for PR) and IELTS General Training are tied. PTE Core is faster and cheaper.
For UK Skilled Worker or Student visa: IELTS UKVI (Academic or General as required) or PTE Academic UKVI. Both accepted.
For US universities: TOEFL iBT is still safest, though IELTS is now accepted by 95%+ of US universities.
